The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien : Is it fiction or memoir? A novel, or a collection of short stories? This masterpiece depicts the men of Alpha Company during the author's tour in Vietnam as they battle the enemy and occasionally each other. In their relationships we see the isolation, longings, loneliness, rage and fear. Yet they find sympathy for strangers and love for each other.

Run by Ann Patchett : This modern domestic drama deals with big issues touching us all -- religion, race, class, politics and, above all else, family. By weaving together seemingly disparate lives to show how intimately humans can connect, this novel explores what truly defines family and the lengths we will go to protect our children.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows : A remarkable tale of the island of Guernsey during the German occupation, this vivid novel, whose characters spring to life in letters and telegrams exchanged over the course of nine months affirms the power of books to nourish people enduring hard times.

In the recent special election on August 4, a five-county landslide put Republican Negron, a former state House Representative from 2000 to 2006, in the state Senate (District 28) to serve the remaining year of state Senator Ken Pruitt's term.

On September 17, 1787, the U.S. Constitution was signed by 39 of the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, PA. Although the U.S. Constitution is the oldest and the shortest of all of the written national constitutions, no official recognition of this significant event was established until Louise Leigh founded Constitution Day Inc. in 1997. President George W. Bush signed Public Law 108-447 designating September 17th as Constitution Day or Citizenship Day. This federal holiday is not observed by granting time off work; however, all publicly funded educational institutions must provide a program on the history of the U.S. Constitution on September 17. If Constitution Day falls on a weekend or on another holiday, then observance of the holiday is on an adjacent weekday.The LLRC of Palm Beach Community College in Lake Worth observes Constitution Day by planning activities with various classes to commemorate the signing of the Constitution.

Library books, textbooks, fiction, reference materials, video tapes and much more will be for sale to benefit the PBCC FACC Chapter and the FACC Scholarship Fund for employees and students.

Alyx Kellington

Alyx Kellington, a photojournalist, has traveled over thirty countries to explore and document different cultures. Her photos have been widely published in newspapers, magazines and educational books.

In the early 1990s, Alyx was covering the economic changes in Mexico City when the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas, the most southern state in Mexico, occurred. While recording the rebellion of both the Mexican military and the armed guerrillas, she explored the struggles of the women as mothers and soldiers. Amor y Dolor en Chiapas (Love and Pain in Chiapas) documents with photographs her experiences in Chiapas.

Under the leadership of Brian Kelley, a group of students, faculty, and staff met for the Study Circle Kick-off on Monday, February 4, in the Gallery of the LLRC - Lake Worth campus. A Study Circle is a small, diverse focus group of 8-15 people who work together for a common goal - to improve communication and race relations within their community.

As part of the Toward a More Perfect Union, the group is encouraged to “Speak out Palm Beach County!" by
• Participating in a forum where personal opinions count,
• Celebrating the community’s diversity,
• Sharing ideas -- getting to know one's neighbors,
• Engaging in stimulating dialog,
• Being involved in planning the community’s future.

Possible topics for future discussions include women in politics, 2008 election, religious tolerance, immigrants, gay and lesbian issues, and HIV in Palm Beach County.
The Study Circles will meet regularly for six to eight weeks at 12:30 pm - 1:30pm in the LLRC Gallery (2nd floor). Check the Diversity Calendar - Lake Worth campus for dates.

Ask a Librarian was very pleased to announce a new feature of our service, Ask a Librarian Mobile, and we would like to tell you more about it. In a world where web-enabled cell phones, smart phones and PDAs are becoming ubiquitous, we wanted to remain relevant to our users and let them get the help they need when and where they need it.

Ask a Librarian Mobile is the e-mail portion of the Ask a Librarian chat reference service and has been optimized for handheld devices. When a user goes to http://www.askalibrarian.org/mobile with their handheld device, they will see the customized interface and be able to ask their question by e-mail and get a response from their local library. Here are some quick facts about the new Mobile service:

1. Ask a Librarian Mobile allows users to access the Ask a Librarian service from their cell phones, PDAs or any other handheld device.

2. Through Ask a Librarian Mobile, users can email a question 24/7, and they will get a response from a librarian at their local library.

"Nikki" Giovanni to speak on PBCC's Lake Worth campus

Palm Beach Community College is honored to have a true American treasure, Yolande Cornelia "Nikki" Giovanni, visit our campus on January 17, 2008. This renowned American Poet will speak in the Martin Luther King, Jr., Plaza on the Lake Worth campus at 7:30 AM. "Making Dreams a Reality" is the theme for this annual celebration which will be accompanied with a complimentary breakfast.

Giovanni is known for voicing out against hate-motivated violence and recently spoke at a commemoration for the Virginia Tech massacre with an "electrifying speech." She is certainly no stranger to audiences as she has been teaching since 1987 and is a Distinguished Professor of English at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.

Powerful speaker Nikki Giovanni - "We Are Virginia Tech"

Giovanni has authored many books of poetry, children's books and essays. In her earlier writings, she was inspired by the civil rights and black power movements. Later, her works echoed poetic pros of African America and love. In tribute to this great poet, the Palm Beach Community College Library has many of her books in a window display on the second floor just inside of the North entrance.

A few years ago Professor Steve Brahlek read one of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings books. Although he was critical of some of the ways Rawlings wrote, he agreed with the simple life she portrayed. He started collecting her books, pictures, videos, and other materials about her.

His collection is displayed on in Gallery of the LLRC - Lake Worth Campus.

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

Although Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings became famous for her writings about Florida, she was not a native Floridian. She was born on August 8, 1896, in Washington D.C. and lived there until she went the University of Wisconsin to major in English. After graduating in 1918, she married Charles Rawlings. In early 1928 the Rawlings moved to Cross Creek, Florida, where she wrote the novel, The Yearling, which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1939. She divorced Mr. Rawlings in 1933, and remarried in 1941 to a St. Augustine business man, Norton Baskin.

In 1942, Rawlings published Cross Creek, an account based on her life in Cross Creek. Reaction to the book was both positive and negative. People enjoyed reading about living the simple life. Her writings about food became so popular, Rawlings later published Cross Creek Cookery. However, one Cross Creek neighbor, Zelma Cason, became so angry when she read what was written about her that she sued Rawlings for for invasion of privacy in the amount of $100,000. After a five-and-a-half year trial, the Florida State Supreme Court ruled that Rawlings would have to pay Zelma $1.00 plus court costs.

Unfortunately, Rawlings did not long live afterwards; she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died on December 14, 1953.

Undergraduate Students and Credit Cards in 2004: An Analysis of Usage Rates and Trends, a study by Nellie Mae, published May 2005 show the following:

Seventy-six percent of undergraduates in 2004 began the school year with credit cards.
The average outstanding balance on undergraduate credit cards was $2,169.
More than half the undergraduates with credit cards carried balances lower than $1,000.
Undergraduates reported freshman year as the most popular time for getting credit cards, with 56% reporting having obtained their first card at age 18.
As students progress through school, credit card usage swells. Ninety-one percent of final year students have a credit card compared to 42% of freshmen. Fifty-six percent of final year students carry four or more cards while only 15% of freshmen carry that many. Final year students carry an average balance of $2,864 while freshmen carry an average balance of $1,585.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is a national observance authorized by Public Law 100-402 which states:

The President is hereby authorized and requested to issue annually a proclamation designating a 31-day period National Hispanic Heritage Month. and calling upon the people of the United States, especially the educational community, to observe such month with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

The observation was initiated in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson but was expanded in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan to cover a month. September 15 was chosen to celebrate the independence of five Latin American countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on September 16 and 18.

Hispanic Americans have strengthened our country and contributed to the spirit of America. National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to honor these contributions and celebrate the rich cultural traditions of our Hispanic-American community.

Hispanic Americans have helped establish America as a place of freedom and opportunity, and their contributions have illustrated what is best about our great Nation. Their hard work, love of country, and deep commitment to faith and family have shaped the character of our country and helped preserve the values we all cherish. By sharing their vibrant culture and heritage, Hispanic Americans have also enriched the American experience and helped define the unique fabric of our Nation.

Americans of Hispanic heritage have carried on a proud tradition of service to our Nation. In times of great consequence, they have answered the call to defend America as members of our Armed Forces. These brave men and women bring honor to America, and we are grateful for their service and sacrifice. In our towns and communities, Hispanic Americans have also shown the good heart of our Nation by volunteering to help their fellow Americans. Their kindness and compassion have made a difference in the lives of others and have made our country a more hopeful place for all.

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the diversity that makes America stronger, and we recognize the many ways Hispanic Americans have enriched our Nation. To honor the achievements of Hispanic Americans, the Congress, by Public Law 100 402, as amended, has authorized and requested the President to issue annually a proclamation designating September 15 through October 15 as "National Hispanic Heritage Month."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 15 through October 15, 2007, as National Hispanic Heritage Month. I call upon public officials, educators, librarians, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs.

Who Are the Hispanics?

According to the Wikipedia, the Hispanics in the United States or Hispanic Americans are an ethnic group in the United States with Hispanic heritage. A Hispanic person may be of any race (Amerindian, Mixed-race, white, black, and Asian), and does not have to be one who speaks Spanish.

The US Census Press Releases show the estimated Hispanic population of the United States as of July 1, 2004, is 41.3 million, making people of Hispanic origin the nation’s largest race or ethnic minority. Hispanics constituted 14 percent of the nation’s total population. (This estimate does not include the 3.9 million residents of Puerto Rico.) The Census bureau projects that the U.S. Hispanic population will reach 102.6 million by 2050.

The LLRC (Lake Worth campus) Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Visit the second floor of the LLRC (Lake Worth Campus) for a display of books about Hispanic authors, culture, and issues. Two bulletin boards (3rd floor and outside 1st floor south entrance) portray notable Spanish people.

The Library has a wealth of material on Hispanic Heritage in its collection. Three staff members (Pat Alvarez, Librarian; Nora Arias, Library Assistant; and Mary Ann Dingui, Library Assistant) speak Spanish and are available to assist you.

On September 17, 1787, the U.S. Constitution was signed by 39 of the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, PA. Although the U.S. Constitution is the oldest and the shortest of all of the written national constitutions, no official recognition of this significant event was established until Louise Leigh founded Constitution Day Inc. in 1997. President George W. Bush signed Public Law 108-447 designating September 17th as Constitution Day or Citizenship Day. This federal holiday is not observed by granting time off work; however, all publicly funded educational institutions must provide a program on the history of the U.S. Constitution on September 17. If Constitution Day falls on a weekend or on another holiday, then observance of the holiday is on an adjacent weekday.

The LLRC of Palm Beach Community College in Lake Worth observes Constitution Day by planning activities with various classes to commemorate the signing of the Constitution.

The Living and Ever Changing U.S. Constitution

Join Dr. Victor Aikhionbare's classes with Harry Krane in the discussion on The Living and Every Changing U.S. Constitution on Monday, September 17. Mr. Krane will speak about the original Constitution that was written in 1789 and 1791, and will discuss a few Supreme Court decisions that show how it has changed with the times over the years.

Harry Krane, B.S., M.A., decorated World War II veteran, was a teacher, a supervisor, an administrator, and a director for the NYC Board of Education. He also taught in the Graduate School of Education at NYU. He developed a curriculum in methods of teaching, created new and unique curriculum for students of all levels of education, authored many magazine articles articles. Although he retired in 1984, he continued revising and creating curriculum as Dean of Education for Grumman Aerospace. For these courses he was granted college credits by the NY State Department of Higher Education. In 1987 he retired to Florida and became the Executive Director of The Institute of New Dimensions (now known as the Center for Lifetime Learning) at Palm Beach Community College. He was elected to the Board of Directors of CLL as a member and officer. He has lectured for 17 years on the use of the personal computer and the United States Constitution. His first book, Too Much, Too Soon, will soon be in print. He is writing another book on the impact of Supreme Court decisions on the U.S. Constitution, law, and the nation. A third book is under way entitled, The Messenger.

For the past ten years notable citizens have led the recitation of the Preamble. School children, college students, the military overseas and Governors or their representatives from every state recite the Preamble simultaneously on Constitution Day. National figures who have led the Preamble are Congressman David Dreier (1997-1999), President George H.W. Bush (2000), U S Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy (2001), Chief Justice Roy Moore Alabama Supreme Court (2002), Governor Edward Rendell (2003), General Tommy Franks (2005), and General Colin Powell (2006). General Colin Powell will lead the nation again this year. It will be dedicated to our military around the world. Join in this salute on Monday, September 17 at 2:00 p.m.
